The Spirit of Apollo

"The Spirit of Apollo" symbolizes those inner qualities which will enable humans to establish the kind of communities beyond Earth which The Apollo Society advocates. Those who possess the Spirit of Apollo value and strive for peace, truth, responsibility, wisdom, perseverence, humor and creativity.

The Apollo Society derives its name and inspiration from the Apollo space program, which itself was named after the Greek god Apollo. The name was chosen wisely.

Apollo embodied the highest ideals of the ancient Greeks. He was the god of archery; his aim was true even to the farthest of targets. Music, poetry, and the healing arts were among his gifts to humanity. He was the god of light, in whom there was no darkness, and therefore also the god of truth. He was a guide to peace and reconciliation. Although not without his faults, Apollo represented the triumph of the nobler aspects of human nature.

The Apollo space program was successful because so many of those involved in it acted in accordance with such high ideals. They had a clear vision of their goal and gave their best efforts in order to achieve what had seemed impossible. The Apollo Moon landings could not have been accomplished without the cooperation of thousands of individuals who each took personal responsibility for the success of the missions.

By strengthening and drawing upon the Spirit of Apollo within us, together we can create the future that we envision.
